In Super Robot Wars 30, there are over 12 series represented. There are five shows from the Gundam series alone, along with representatives from mech-based anime Majestic Prince, SSSS.GRIDMAN, andCode Geass. Super Robot Wars 30 has a lot of mechanics so it can be confusing even for tactical RPG veterans. Let’s go through some quick things to be aware of at the beginning of the game.

6 Controller Shortcuts

There are a lot of tutorials in Super Robot Wars 30 that are thrown at the player seemingly too fast. This is typical for RPGs. Here are the best controller shortcuts to use in the Switch version that the game doesn’t do the best job of telling players:

Players can hit Y on the map to select whichever unit they want instead of hunting them down. During a battle animation, players can press A to make the sequence go faster and to have the UI disappear. Hitting B will skip the battle altogether. Holding down R and A will speed through text quicker in story sequences. These scenes can be fully skipped if players hit L and the Plus button at the same time . To soft reset, press R, L, and the Plus button all at once .

5 Understanding Difficulty Limits

Players can choose to play Super Robot Wars 30 on one of four difficulty settings at the start. They can change the difficulty after that, which is a nice accessible feature. However, there is a catch. This can only be done at the base ship before a battle begins. That means it is important to save manually before starting a match.

Players never know how hard a battle is going to be. They may need to back out and retry on a lower setting. Losing progress like this is never fun but it is better than the alternative of restarting from the very start of the game. The same is true if players find a map too easy and they wish to increase the challenge instead.

4 Battle Tips

There is a lot to cover about the game’s combat. One of the more useful features is the auto-battle system. However, don’t rely too heavily on this mechanic and simply walk away to let Super Robot Wars 30 do its thing. The AI isn’t the best in making the perfect choices even if players tweak what units focus on from offensive to defensive maneuvers. The combat animations are another highlight in the game.

However, seeing them all a hundred times over can get tiring. There are fast-forward and skip options, but there is an additional feature to further speed up the process. In the matchup screen, players can choose to turn animations off. It’s also important to alternate between kills to keep the team around the same level. There aren’t many opportunities to grind in Super Robot Wars 30unlike other RPGs so every experience point is precious.

3 Stay Healthy, Keep The Unit Together

One of the reasons why auto-battle isn’t the best choice is because the AI will often branch out. This is a bad move. The enemy often outnumbers the player’s team by a 2:1 margin. This means if a character splits off to fight one enemy, they might get surrounded by two others or more and perhaps die. There are support abilities to heal mechs in combat but they are costly and cannot be spammed.

Mechs can dock into the mothership, which is the better way to heal. The easiest way to keep the team healthy then is to have everyone clustered together. Have the mothership be in the middle with the strongest units surrounding it. This may make battles last longer, but Super Robot Wars 30 will be easier and less frustrating in the long run. This strategy can be applied to several tactical RPGs.

2 Upgrade Tips

There are three major currencies in the game:

PP can be applied to pilots so that they can learn supportive abilities to use in battle. Credits are used to upgrade mechs from increasing HP to boosting weapon damage. MxP is used to expand the ship.

Before upgrading pilots or mechs, focus on the ship.

Building a better ship will earn benefits to upgrading the other two categories. For example, in the ship’s lab, there is a way to increase Credits and experience points earned in battle by 10%. Those two upgrades should be bought right away. There are also programs to decrease the cost of Credits used when upgrading mechs.

1 Save In-Between Every Turn

Players can manually save up to 120 files in the intermission menu on the ship. That’s way more than enough slots but the number is appreciated. As mentioned earlier, it’s always important to save before a mission. Players can also save during battles with the Suspend option. Every time the game is suspended, the previous save is erased.

The nice thing about this is that players won’t get kicked out of the menu, unlike some other RPGs. Exploit this benefit and make sure to save the game with Suspend at the start of every turn. That way if a Game Over screen appears, players can simply soft reset and then restart from the Suspend option rather than the manual save. The overall tip to share between manual saves and Suspend is to stay cautious.

Super Robot Wars 30 was released on October 27, 2021 and is available officially on PC in North America. However, it is possible to import PS4 and Switch physical copies with full English subtitles as well.
